Before Your Consult...

  • DO fill out the new patient intake forms prior to your consult. This will save a lot of time and will afford us the opportunity to work together longer and start the feeding sooner. If you don't fill them out, no need to worry. We can still do it at the time of consultation.
  • DO prepare by ensuring that the baby is hungry if the consult is based around assistance with a feeding. However DON'T hold off on feeding if your baby is very fussy and upset, as they most likely will not perform well during the consult. Ideally, the baby will be calm and alert when the IBCLC arrives. We advise trying to work feedings so that the last full feeding is around an hour and half before the appointment. Comfort nursing your baby in between is absolutely fine!
  • DO keep your baby skin to skin after that last feeding prior to the consult. Skin to skin is where the baby is down to the diaper and lying directly on you or your partner's bare chest with a blanket or two across the back if it is cold. This will do wonders to help the baby be calm and ready to eat when it is time for the consultation.
  • DO let me know as soon as possible if you feel that the consultation may not work at the originally scheduled time. Call your IBCLC to see if she thinks you should reschedule.
  • DO invite anyone you would like to be at the consult. It can be wonderful to have a spouse, friend, loved one, doula, etc to be there so they can learn how best to support you. If you have other children, they are welcome to be there, but it might be good to have an activity for them to be doing or to have someone there to keep an eye on them while we focus on the consult.
  • DO have your breastfeeding aids or equipment handy if you have questions about them or need to use them (i.e. pump, flanges, nipple shield, bottles, supplemental nursing system, etc.).
  • DO think of any questions or concerns you have prior to the consult so we can address your needs face to face. We are always available via phone, text and email if you forget or think of something later though!
  • DON'T worry about hosting me or feeling that you need to offer food and drink. You've already got a lot on your plate!
  • DON'T worry about your pets. I love animals!
  • DON'T worry about cleaning. I just need a place to help you breastfeed and to wash my hands. I am not here to judge the cleanliness of your home, I'm here to help you nurse your little one. I will tell you not to lift a finger and focus on feedings and skin to skin anyway!
  • DO wear something that is easy to move for feedings and assessment. Also, don't worry about your baby's outfit. We will most likely be stripping him/her down anyway!
  • DO feel free to contact me. I am here to help you reach your goals, whatever those may be, and you are never a bother to me. I love what I do and I love hearing from my clients!
  • DON'T hesitate to tell me if something doesn't feel right, hurts or isn't working for you. I will be asking you throughout the consult how you are feeling physically, emotionally, etc. I want you to be as open and honest as possible. I need to know what is working and what isn't working. I will always ask before touching you or baby.
  • DO know that The Mama Mantra is a guilt-free practice. We are here to meet YOUR goals. We will provide you with all of the necessary information, assistance, support and resources and meet you where you want to be.
